DAVID CAMPBELL
I grew up on the edge of a great Ocean where the Gulf Stream merges with the North Atlantic. It is deep, mysterious, soothing and restless. As an artist I am drawn to it, connected. My spirit inspired and renewed by her raw primordial beauty. It is my muse.
All of my work is handbuilt, each piece individually sculpted. I work through an intuitive process of addition and subtraction. Hands moving and modeling clay faster than my mind can conceive the object. They branch out like coral, cluster like shells and flow like fish. I create in a fluid, constant state of flux until the clay slowly dries and the sculpting draws to an end. My movements and the history of my marks on its surface now frozen in time like a petrified fossil.
My collection of stoneware vessels are the Wash Ashores of this creative journey.
Oka in Japanese means cherry blossom and Dona translates to madam or lady. The Oka Dona Vase is a true ocean blossom. The richly textured unfurled edge wraps the vase like a organic shawl with a the smaller companion vase contrasting in texture. She is a wonderfully decorative and original work of art. Inspired by a love of the sea and the as yet undiscovered beauties of the deep.
